Let's dive into the details of this unforgettable day in Glen Arbor.

Morning Delights at The Mill, Glen Arbor

A coffee cup and a savory pastry on a napkin stamped with 'The Mill' logo, casually placed on an outdoor wooden table, suggesting a cozy and rustic dining experience.

Kickstart your day with a visit to The Mill Glen Arbor, a quaint cafe located in the newly remodeled, Historic 19th Century Grist Mill. Located just on the outskirts of Glen Arbor nestled along the Crystal River, The Mill is known for its rustic charm and welcoming atmosphere. Begin your morning with a latte with pistachio milk, and pair it with a delectable pastry, I’d suggest the pear, cheddar, and ham galette. The combination of sweet pears, savory ham, and sharp cheddar cheese baked in a flaky crust will tantalize your taste buds and provide the energy you need for the day ahead.

If you are spending longer than a day in Glen Arbor, don’t miss their Supper Club! Each supper club evening begins with a delightful cocktail hour accompanied by light appetizers. As the night progresses, you'll be treated to a main course featuring a generous spread of expertly crafted dishes made from locally-sourced ingredients. To round off the experience, a sweet treat will be served for that extra touch of satisfaction. Access to the Supper Club is granted with the purchase of a pre-sale ticket which can be conveniently booked through MyNorth Tickets. The Mill will host its last supper club in March as they transition to open the river-level restaurant shortly after.

Exploring Sleeping Bear Dunes

Next, it's time to explore one of Michigan's most iconic natural wonders - Sleeping Bear Dunes. Depending on your preference and energy level, there are several ways to experience this breathtaking landscape.

1. Sleeping Bear Dune Overlook: If you're looking for panoramic views without a strenuous hike, head to the Sleeping Bear Dune Overlook. The short walk from the parking area rewards you with a stunning vista of the dunes, Lake Michigan, and the surrounding forests. If you’re feeling brave you can run down the dunes to the lake but remember you have to hike back up.

2. Sleeping Bear Beach: For those seeking a more relaxed beach experience, make your way to Sleeping Bear Beach. Park your car and stroll down to the shore, where you can bask in the sun and dip your toes in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Michigan.

3. Dune Climb: If you're up for a challenge and want a workout, take on the Dune Climb. This exhilarating hike involves ascending the massive sand dunes. It’s 2 miles the the lake shore and 2 miles back out. The hike has steep hills in both directions. Make sure to pack light and bring essentials only like water, sunscreen, a small towel, and snacks, as you won’t want to carry too much. However, the reward is worth it.

After conquering the dunes, it's time to unwind at the beautiful beach. Spread your beach towel on the soft sand, lather up with sunscreen, and take a refreshing dip in Lake Michigan's cool waters. The beach offers the perfect setting for a day of relaxation. Read a good book, play beach games, or simply bask in the natural beauty that surrounds you.

Best Lunch Spots, Glen Arbor

As the day rolls on, head back to Glen Arbor for a late lunch or a well-deserved happy hour.

Cherry Republic

A beloved local establishment, Cherry Republic is a must-visit for a unique dining experience. Cherries are the star of the show here, featured in nearly every menu item. With a brew pub, winery, ice cream stand and gift shop attached, there's something for everyone.

Start with a refreshing Golden Bear Ale, which strikes the perfect balance between sweet and savory. For a comforting meal, indulge in the Cherry Jam Grilled Cheese, a delightful twist on a classic sandwich. On a warm day, the Cherry Chicken Salad is a refreshing and satisfying choice. Don't forget to sample their famous cherry-inspired desserts and wines next door and pick up a few cherry treats for your way home. Some of my favs include the sour cherry patches, dark chocolate covered cherries, cherry crumb pie, and the cherry salsa.

Arts Tavern

Since 1934, Art's has been locally owned and operated. It is Glen Arbor's beloved gathering place, known for iconic burgers and vibrant personality. It’s a bit retro, a bit fun-loving, and always authentically ART'S. It is a must visit while in town!

Boondocks

Boonedocks is an excellent choice for family dining. They are renowned for their expansive patio and their all-American menu, which includes a wide variety of options such as burgers, locally sourced whitefish and perch, sandwiches, fresh salads, and even an on-site shop called Sleeping Bear Sweets. With something to satisfy every palate, Boonedocks is sure to please.

The Mill

The Mill, as mentioned earlier, offers a fantastic lunch menu that proudly features locally sourced ingredients and a great wine and beer selection adds to the dining experience. During the summer months, guests can savor their meal on the patio, where the serene beauty of nature surrounds you, with the crystal river flowing nearby and the graceful weeping willow draping over the deck.

Shopping Glen Arbor

After a satisfying meal, walk around the charming downtown. Pop into Imagine That for fun gifts, The Cottage Book shop for your next read, and the Totem Shop for a wide selection of outdoor gear.
